McFarland Track Club visited Boise, Idaho, to participate in the Bob Firman Nike Invitational. Both boys and girls midget teams won first place. Runners include: top row left to right- Asst. It was in the high 90s and very humid today at McFarland high school today. The course was a one mile loop around the track and playing fields and the length was a 5k. All the divisions ran the same 5k course.

The varsity girls race was won by Ridgeview's Tijerra Lynch in a time of 19:26 and her squad won the team title as well. On the boys side, Robby Baker (Ridgeview Sr) won the 5k in 16 flat and lead his squad to a team victory. This is the first time in recent memory that a Kern County team has beaten McFarland in any meet in years.

In fact, last year I did the math and an all-star team from Bakersfield that include state champ Chris Schwartz would have lost to McFarland at valley last year! So for Ridgeview to pull off this win is impressive.

Next up for Ridgeview is to go sub 85 (17 minute average per man) as a team at Woodward, McFarland squads doing it all the time but no other Kern County team has done in in recent memory. Ridgeview got close with an 85:02 last year.

With nine state titles under its belt, McFarland is looking for the elusive tenth. Over the past years they were 2nd in 2008, 3rd in 2007, 4th in 2006 and 5th in 2005. So following the trend the should be first this fall.

They have not won since 2001, but with four returnees from the second place squad and a super freshman, who just broke a ten year plus record Junior Olympic's 3000m mark (9:08), this should be their year.

Coach Ayon has done a little tweeking with training this summer and hopes to have his squad peak a little later this season. Last year, they ran into a juggernaut, named Big Bear, that ran the fastest all time state performance as a team in the history of division four. This year Coach Ayon wants his Cougars at top form at the state meet and may forgo some traveling to do this.

Erick Garcia Becomes National Champ & Record Holder

Like they say, the rich get richer! Last fall in Rosedale, I saw a youngster dominate the field in the 4k Run CC Youth Boys at the USATF Central California Junior Olympic Cross country Championships.

Erick Garcia ran 13:22 on the multi-looped 4k course (2.4 miles) at about 5:30 per mile pace here in Rosedale. Eventually he qualified for the USATF Cross Country Nationals in Virginia on 12/13/09 and came in 11th in a time of 13:38 for the 4k.

This past weekend he traveled to 2009 USATF National Junior Olympic Championships at Greensboro, NC and won the 3000 Meter Youth Boys event and set the national record to boot! he ran 9:08.13 and broke the record that had been standing for 16 years.

His 3000 time would be about 9:45 for the 3200. The youth age group is for athletes born in 1995 and 1996. So the athletes are either 13 or 14 for the most part. Erick's brother Eddie ran for McFarland and will be attending Cal State Fresno this fall. Erick will be a freshman this fall for McFarland and may just be the missing piece in McFarland's quest for a tenth state cross country title.

McFarland Race of Champions

McFarland Race of Champions will be on August 15th at 8:00 am Located in the orange groves 6 miles East of McFarland on Sherwood Ave.

The best way to get there is to take Porterville Hwy north and then turn left on Sherwood Ave (head west) and the race is a mile up the road.

Last year the Lady Cougars came in third at valley and according to their coaches, they expect to make a run for the title this fall. Having 6 of the 7 girls returning is a good start and they are looking to having twice that number competing for a spot on the varsity squad.McFarland's goal is to have their top 5 run under 21 at Woodward.

Backing up this fall's expectations, are some good times on the track. Plus many of the girls on the squad are following in their families footsteps. Perezchica and Ayon are just a few of the famous surnames on the team.

Where Were You?

The BTC summer series gets hundreds of runners and so should the McFarland summer series. It is inexpensive (same price as the BTC) , unique course and for a good cause (the McFarland Running Club).

Plus it is only 20 miles from Bakersfield, which is not that much further then the BTC race, especially if you take Highway 65 (Porterville Hwy). There are no lights and very little traffic, so the drive goes by quick. Just Take 65 and turn left on Sherwood ave. (west) for less then a mile.

If you do three races, you get an Adidas tech t-shirt and awards. So there are three races left and you need to show up for this great series.

Now ever other week when this race comes up, I promote it and it is amusing how many people write me back on why they can not make the race. Most use its too far away, doesn't fit in my training schedule, yada yada. I think many do not want to get smoked myself or do not want to run the challenging hilly course.

But just try one, the Bakers came to the third one and really enjoyed it. Sure the course is hard and the competition is fast but so what. Come out and try something different. Come out and run on the courses that have been the proving grounds for nine state titles. Come out and run with future state champions. Plus they have really good grapes and plums after the race!

I did the math last year and McFarland beats an All-Star team from Kern County with Schwartz leading it. In recent memory, no other Kern team has broke 85 minutes (average sub 17 for all five boys) at Woodward even. McFarland does it almost every time they run on the valley and state meet course.

The Cougars never seem to rebuild, they just reload which is remarkable since the school only has 800 students. Figure half are boys, so you are down to 400. Then if you take in account boys who are ineligible or play football and you are talking a very small talent pool to draw from. It is truly amazing the success they have had over the past 20 years.
Last year, McFarland came in 2nd at the state meet, in 2007 they came in 3rd, 2006 they came in 4th and 5th in 2005. So this year they need to complete the cycle, win state and get their tenth title. With their state success, one forgets all the valley titles they have won in a row

The team had a website HERE but it appears to not work.

On that site, it listed all the valley and league titles that the school has won. I remember that basically in the past twenty plus years they have won them all with maybe a second in valley some where. Going into 2009, McFarland will be lead by Perez and Nava who are now juniors and have been on the varsity squad since they were freshmen. Also two seniors Camargo and Bautista will be returning as well.

As one can tell from the track times, the Cougars had a successful season and Jose Monreal (So) looks like he will complete the top five. He ran 10:03 for the 3200. Then their is always the incoming freshmen class and I am certain there will be one or two on that varsity squad, when they go for their tenth title in November.

By the way, McFarland is tied for the most state titles and has more podium finishes then any other school (13 - 9 firsts, 2 seconds and 2 thirds.)
